The Water Policy Roundtable and the Launch of the Global Water Bankruptcy Report, co-hosted by the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) and the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations, will present the key findings and policy implications of the Global Water Bankruptcy Report. The event will also explore strategies to elevate water as a global priority and a catalyst for international cooperation, marking UNU-INWEH's 30th anniversary.
As the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) marks its 30th anniversary, this milestone offers a timely moment to reflect on the state of global water systems and the challenges ahead. Against this backdrop, UNU-INWEH's new flagship report, Global Water Bankruptcy: Living Beyond Our Hydrological Means in the Post-Crisis Era, reveals how the sustained overdraft of rivers, aquifers, and freshwater ecosystems has pushed many water systems into a post-crisis condition—one in which historical hydrological baselines can no longer be restored without transformative change. Co-hosted by UNU-INWEH and the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations, this Water Policy Roundtable will examine the report's key findings and policy implications while exploring opportunities to elevate water as a global priority and catalyst for cooperation. The discussion will also help inform ambition, priorities, and collective action as the international community approaches major milestones in 2026, 2028, and beyond, including the conclusion of the Water Action Decade.
