Water at the Heart of the Rio Conventions: From Commitments to Action (HLPF 2026 Side Event).


Co-hosted by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Stockholm International Water Institute, this high-level side event will examine how water can serve as an implementation entry point across the three Rio Conventions.

The discussion will focus on moving from policy ambition to action by identifying barriers to implementation, strengthening political prioritization, and improving financing pathways for integrated water-climate-nature solutions. Aligned with the HLPF 2026 Theme, this side event will also showcases the potential for realizing efficiencies in multilateral governance for water and optimizing resources for transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions on SDG progress.

The meeting aims to discuss how to mainstream water into global climate processes, including Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) as well as to plan and provide guidance to the implementation of the activities on water and climate under the programme of work for 2025-2027 of the Water Convention (forthcoming). The meeting is open to experts representing governmental authorities, the private sector, non-governmental and international organizations as well as other interested stakeholders.
